Nags Head is located in Dare County on the Outer Banks. It is known for the large sand dunes that are within the town. Although the population grows by the thousands in the summer months it is home to about 3000 people year round. One theory as to how the town got it’s name is in pirate days they would hang oil lanterns around the necks of mules and walk them along the high sand dudes and it would resemble ships in safe harbor and the ships at sea would be lured in and would become grounded or wrecked on the beach and they could seize the cargo aboard the ship. The mule that was used was referred to as “the old nag”. Another theory on it’s name is that the early English who arrived here named it after Nag’s Head Island which is located in England. Most people like the pirate story best. Although the second theory is the most likely.

Kill Devil Hills just south of Kitty Hawk on the Outer Banks. There are several theories on how it became known as Kill Devel Hills.  One theory suggests it came from one of the larger sand dunes called Kill Devil Hill. Another theory is incolonial times when shipwrecks occurred near the beaches the locals would scavenge the cargo that washed ashore or that was on the ships that were grounded by the rough surf. Rum was call “Kill Devil” by the English. It is thought that rum or “Kill Devil” was hidden by the locals in the large sand dune hill-therefore referred to as Kill Devil Hill. One more theory about the town’s name refers to the moonshine that was brewed by pirates of the area, moonshine strong enough to “kill the devil”.  Whichever of the theories you choose to believe the town of Kill Devil Hills is the oldest town on the Outer Banks.

Kitty Hawk  was established in the early 18th century . The name probably comes from the Native American name Chickahawk meaning “goose hunting grounds”. Kittty Hawk is home to over 3,000 people. The beaches on the Atlantic Ocean side are wide, clean and beautiful. The sound side is peaceful and offers gorgeous nightly sunset views over the Albermarle Sound to the west.
