Sand on Highway 12 Due to High Winds

Sand on Highway 12 on Hatteras Island due to high winds causing problems. Dare County Sheriff’s office put out this notification this evening. The problem is happening at the dunes between Frisco and Hatteras Village. Also, there are reports of sound side flooding in the tri-villages of Salvo, Waves and Rodanthe on Hatteras Island.

FROM THE LONG STRETCH OF FRISCO BEACH ACCESS TO THE BEGINNING OF HATTERAS, DUNES ARE STARTING TO ROLL ONTO THE ROADWAY. STANDING SAND STARTING TO COVER THE ROAD. DEPUTIES WILL BE CHECKING THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT FOR FURTHER ROAD CONDITIONS. 6-8 INCHES OF SAND CURRENTLY COVER PARTS OF THE ROAD BUT IT IS STILL PASSABLE.

As of 7:00 pm the following road conditions exist on Hatteras Island. On NC 12 just south of the Richard Etheridge Bridge there is sound tide in the South Bound lane approximately 2 inches deep. There is standing water in the area of Camp Hatteras. There is standing water in the area of Otter Way in Salvo with depths of up to approximately 5 inches. Other areas have slight amounts of ponding water. High tide is at 2:16am.
Drive cautious and be mindful the water on the roads is salt water.
