Cape Point Campground Hatteras Vandalism
Cape Point Campground on Hatteras Island has recently had two separate occurrences of vandalism. The first act of vandalism happened on Feb. 10, 2015 when a vehicle damaged vegetation by driving off-road spinning tires, driving in circles, running over signs and damaging fences. Days later another act of vandalism occurred when two port-a-potty units were set on fire causing significant damage to the units and the fence around the units.
While the campground is closed to camping during the winter months the area is open to the public for activities such as bird watching, walking and jogging and viewing wildlife. Both acts of vandalism are under investigation. Destruction of government property is a federal criminal violation with up to a $5,000 fine and up to six months imprisonment. Anyone with any information about the vandalism incident is asked to contact the Cape Hatteras National Park Service.
