Cape Point Still Closed On Hatteras Island to ORV

American oystercatcher baby birds learning to fly is the reason there is a delay for ORV access to Cape Point on Hatteras Island this year. Last year the beaches were opened to driving on August 3. It will take another 1-2 weeks this year before beach driving will be allowed. Apparently American oystercatcher babies are heavy and and clumsy and they need to be able to fly 30 feet before vehicles are allowed on the beaches.
