The charter boat Sandra D out of Pirate’s Cove Marina hit the Bonner Bridge early Monday morning resulting in a large hole in the boat. The boat hit one of the piling under the bridge and started to sink. There were nine people on board with no report of major injuries. The Coast Guard was called and removed seven people from a good Samaritan’s boat that witnessed the accident and assisted the boaters from the charter boat.The charter boat’s owner intentionally grounded his boat to keep it from sinking. The Coast Guard crew then retrieved the owner and a crewman and took them to shore. The Sandra D was using an alternate unmarked channel under the bridge because it is deeper than the marked channel.
