Emerald Isle Drowning Of Missouri Teenager While On Church Retreat
Sixteen year old Marvin Scott from Missouri drowned on Tuesday July 28, 2015. The Emerald Isle drowning happened on Tuesday evening. He and another boy were hit by a large wave and they were then carried further away from shore by a rip current. The two boys were on a church retreat trip to the North Carolina beach. One boy was pulled to shore by people nearby on the beach. But Scott went under and witnesses lost sight of him.
Emerald Isle rescue crews launched a personal water craft into the area to search for Scott. The 16-year-old was found about 50 yards from shore but 25 minutes and elapsed. Once brought to shore CPR and life saving efforts were initiated by rescue personnel. A Marine Corp helicopter (that was on a training exercise) flew the boy to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC. Unfortunately Scot later died. Members of the church group on the retreat notified the boy’s family. Marvin Scott would have been a junior in high school this fall.
The incident happened Tuesday about 7:30 PM. Police, Fire and EMS units responded to 911 calls for help to Ocean Drive. There are reports that the surf was rough that night with strong waves. Others on the beach reported that the surf had been rough all day.
