Work by the NCDOT began this week on Highway 12 at the Pea Island bridge on Hatteras Island at the North Carolina Outer Banks. To prevent repeated overwash on Highway 12 at the site of the temporary bridge road crews are raising the level of the road at both ends. One end is being raised 18 ” and the opposite end will be raised 6″. This means while the work is being done traffic will be down to one lane with workers directing traffic through the work zone. The project should only take about a month if the weather cooperates.
Hopefully raising the elevation at both end of the road leading to the temporary bridge in the Pea Island area will help reduce the frequent flooding issues that happens. The replacement project is now on hold with no end in sight sadly. Now both the Pea Island replacement bridge and the replacement Bonner Bridge are tied up in legal issues with no comments from all involved.
