Ferry Crew Honored for Medical Emergency Actions In June

Seven crew members on a ferry from Hatteras to Ocracoke were honored for their actions during a medical emergency that occurred  on the ferry run this
past June. The captain of the ferry Shawn Gray collapsed in the wheelhouse. He was unresponsive and was not breathing. Crew members started emergency medical procedures while another crew member took control of the ferry. Professional medical help from a ferry passenger was also found. The crew called Hyde County EMS to arrange for waiting help once the ferry docked on Ocracoke Island. Captain Gray has since made a full recovery and is back at work. He was at the honor presentation when the crews’ actions were acknowledged. DOT Secretary Tony Tata awarded the crew  with the Ferry Division’s Extra Mile Award.
